Syllabus

The Mechanical Engineering and Energy Minor is intended for students who want to acquire a sound engineering culture in the fields of energy studies and mechanical engineering (energy conversion, rational use of energy, land and air transport). The individual project in third year is the very core of the Minor and often relates to a complex system both in design and use (reliability and safety, maintenance, modelling and management. The project calls upon basic sciences (mechanics, fluid mechanics, heat transfer) as well as on all knowledge in management and economics acquired at the School. The collective preparation focuses rather on the working methods of the executive engineer, the energy context, progress achieved in design and operating techniques and the objectives of companies active in a field. It comprises a kind of collective project whereby a new subject is selected each year.

Programme

The personal project extends throughout the third year and can contribute, for example, to improving the way an industrial unit operates, integrating technical innovations in a given product and substantial by reducing its energy and environmental impact. It can sometimes focus on purely economic aspects. It usually takes place in an industrial company such as a car or aircraft manufacturer, an electricity-, gas- or oil-producing company or an equipment manufacturer, but can also be conducted in a research and development establishment. Work is conducted under the responsibility of an engineer from the company with the advice of some researchers at the Ecole des Mines Energy Research Centre, which has a staff of 100 or more people.
Preparation for personal studies (joint supervisor: F. Neirac)
Training sessions (over approximately 6 weeks) are aimed first at ensuring a better knowledge of the companies concerned and the means an engineer uses in his(her) activities. Such information can be divided up into four areas:
- human communication (oral expression, use of visual aids, preparation of technical decisions and the organization of work, thanks particularly to business games);
- energy (problems and methods, economic aspects and global energy problems, environment, teamwork on these themes);
- progress achieved in the mechanical engineering sector (case studies, visits to workshops);
- modelling of technical devices (with work practice on innovative systems).
These sessions also enable the students, as a group, to produce a synoptic report on the basis of a survey conducted directly on one of the innovations in progress on the energy scene. The report is then the subject of an argumentative presentation and provides an opportunity for re-using the range of skills that have just been acquired.
